The Tohorā has a special place in Māori culture, mythology and cosmology. Traditionally, it was believed that the tohorā swam between the physical and spiritual realms, and that it was a symbol of luck and protection. As Kaitiaki, Māori called upon pods of tohorā to help navigate at sea and through ocean storms, ensuring safe passage.

Made from Redwood and left to age outside in the elements for a year then cut on the bandsaw and assembled. Lumber is burnt and then scrubbed to reveal deep grain and give a charcoal/black colouring. A generous coat of linseed oil is applied during finishing.

For indoor and outdoor use. Because of the burning the wood is protected for outdoor conditions.

Approx size: 64 x34 cm
