Rebel Flags is a collection of artworks and textile works that reclaim imagery drawn from Māori peace and war flags — symbols historically framed through colonial narratives as “captured rebel flags.” Here, rebellion is repositioned as resistance, autonomy, and the assertion of mana whenua.
Created using reclaimed materials and direct, uncompromising mark-making, the collection reflects histories of land occupation, fragmentation, and return. Each work acknowledges whenua as lived, contested, and held through care, presence, and responsibility.
