He Ipu Whenua No.3B
Waxed canvas with ink marker

This work is part of the Rebel Flags collection and is created on reclaimed tent canvas — a material tied to land occupation and movement. For Māori, the return to whenua has often begun with tent occupations, asserting presence before legal recognition.

Titled He Ipu Whenua (“a vessel of land”), each work is numbered using Māori land title conventions, referencing the subdivision and administration of whenua.

Motifs drawn from Māori peace and war flags, alongside landscapes and vessel forms, speak to whenua as contested, held, and carried across generations. Drawn directly onto canvas using marker pens, the process is immediate and intentionally uncomplicated.

Each piece is unique.

This piece has been waxed using New Zealand bees wax which darkens the cotton canvas.

The canvas is a light cotton poplin and can be hung with tacks directly into a plaster wall or tacked to top timber strip.
